2015 / 16 Church Relief Project

The Ministry Beyond Oak Ridges work group is committed to adopting a child in need from India through SPICE.

SPICE is an international partnership led by the Brethren in Christ in India and Nepal supported through BIC World Missions.  The program consists of a network of 9 residences across India and Nepal, housing 1,000 children annually.

The SPICE program offers holistic Christ-centred child development; the combination of education, group housing, and nutrition enables children to live out their God-given potential.

Introducing the Oak Ridges Sunday School & Kidz Club Sponsored Child…  Roclan Abdias Cahuec Quej

Roclan lives in Guatemala (Central) and  is a descendant of the Mayan Poqomchi tribe.  36 years of civil war has devastated the country.  Guatemala is ranked 4th internationally for malnutrition.  In Roclan’s region, the average man earns $5 for a full day of work.  The typical family has 5 – 7 children.  Forty percent of these children live in single-parent homes.  More than 80% of the people in the region are illiterate.

Roclan is 6 years old and attends a kindergarten class in one of several schools run by Impact Ministries.  He enjoys playing soccer!  When he grows up he wants to be a teacher.

Roclan lives with his parents and 7 siblings.  His father is a pastor and his mother works at home.  They make about $70/month.

By sponsoring him, the children of our church are enabling Roclan to receive:

  1. an academic, Christ-centred education
  2. daily nutritious meals & vitamins
  3. medical & dental care
  4. Christian discipleship
  5. A birthday gift
  6. new shoes at Christmas

Keep up the good work, kids!!!

“Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his deed.”

– Proverbs 19:17

Emergency Responses -The Oak Ridges Church also responds to practical, emergency world needs through the preparation and sending of personal hygiene kits for earthquake victims, as well as sending blankets and children’s school bags to be distributed by the Mennonite Central Committee.

International School Kit Challenge – Notebooks and pencils become treasures to international families who struggle to afford basic school supplies.  Through the work of the Mennonite Central Committee, collected school kits are also distributed to refugee and displaced children, helping students and teachers add some normalcy to disrupted lives.  They are frequently requested after natural disasters.  In past, kits have been sent to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kenya, Swaziland, Jordan and Zambia.
